God Invites Us to Know Him and Make Him Known

January 19, 2020 Speaker: Mike McDonald Series: Sent for the Sake of Others

Topic: Sent for the Sake of Others Passage: Matthew 13:10–23

Jesus’ parables are meant to expose hard hearts while simultaneously inviting others who are open to his healing (v. 15).   The receptive ones will seek further knowledge by pursuing God.  The Parable of the Sower explores various levels of receptivity to God’s word.  Only one of the four soils brings forth fruit.  The people represented by the good soil are the ones who hear God’s word and understand it so that they bear fruit.  From further investigation, they learn that fruit is comprised of worship and witness, the two main purposes of the Church.  God invites us into a true relationship with him and calls us into mission.

God invites us to know him and make him known.

It is not enough to hear God’s word, it must also be understood.  This requires investigation and honest self-assessment.  How do you characterize your own “soil?”

Path – This soil represents those who don’t understand and quickly have the word snatched from them.  Their hearts are closed to the Good News.

Rock – This soil represents those who fall away from faith when they find it challenging.

Thorns – This soil represents those whose fruitfulness is choked out because the cares and delights of the world occupy their hearts.

Good – This soil represents those who hear, understand, and bear fruit.  They know God and serve him actively.

The spiritually hungry who lack understanding are invited to question and seek the Lord.  Elsewhere, Jesus says, “seek and you will find.”  For those who know and love Christ, this parable helps with assessment of others in their life so they can serve as a witness.

Taking It Home: Prayerfully consider the potential receptivity of those you know.  Learn more through active listening.  When appropriate invite someone to the Alpha Course.
