A Recap from Sunday's Sermon

Preaching Text: Isaiah 35:1-10

God’s kingdom is here in our midst everywhere for us to see.  The new “age” has begun with Christ’s first coming, but much of the old still remains.  It’s like the crocus plant (v.1) appearing in a desert.  We each have a choice to focus on the evidence of the kingdom (new life) or the problems of the old age (brokenness).   Are you someone who is more likely to see what’s still broken or what is being made new?  Regardless, today’s text encourages you to develop the habit of rejoicing.

We rejoice because the glory of God is overtaking all that is passing away.

Isaiah 35 describes in colorful images the advent of God’s kingdom for exiled people.  Historically, the reference was to the Assyrian invasion of Israel’s northern kingdom.  More generally, it addresses all people living in “exile” as sojourners in a broken world.  Isaiah 35 promises that the wilderness will be glad and rejoice in God’s majesty (v.2).  Therefore, this news should be used to strengthen those who are afraid (v.4).

Verses 5-7 show God’s saving presence in terms of specific physical healings for the blind, deaf, mute and lame.  These verses were literally fulfilled in Jesus’ ministry.  When his cousin, John the Baptist, was in prison he sent messengers to Jesus because he was confused about why all the other problems were not resolved.  Jesus connects his own public healings with the words of Isaiah.  The kingdom was upon them, but much is left to made right still.  Nevertheless, Isaiah 35 mentions “joy” four times, along with rejoicing, singing and gladness each several times.

Taking it home:  To develop the habit of rejoicing, make it your goal today to recognize 5 signs of God’s presence healing our world.  Then rejoice!
