The Good News Changes Your Life

January 21, 2024 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: Partakers of the Promise

Topic: Epiphany Passage: Mark 1:14–20

For those who come to him burdened, Jesus promises rest. But how does someone come? It seems that coming to him involves embracing change, a seldom popular word. It requires a change of allegiances and a change of heart. Both things are a result of receiving the Gospel, which literally means “good news.”

The Good News changes your life.

In Mark’s account of Jesus’ ministry, he uses the word “gospel” seven times. He tells us that “Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying…” What follows is a sentence that summarizes the meaning of “gospel.” Four words are key to understanding it.

  1. TIME - The time is fulfilled. The Greek word, kairos, means “event” rather than chronological time. The event of Jesus’ public ministry was the fulfillment of all that Moses and the prophets predicted.
  1. KINGDOM – This means someone’s reign rather than a geographic realm. It’s about Jesus reclaiming what was stolen by Satan. It’s a war declaration. In successive paragraphs, Mark demonstrates Jesus’ power over sickness, the laws of nature, demons and death. Coming to Jesus means changing kingdoms.
  1. REPENT – This means “change of mind.” It’s often confused with remorse for merely the consequences of sin. True repentance is disdain for the sinful desires in one’s heart. Coming to Jesus means asking for a renewed heart, which only he can give.
  1. BELIEVE – Based on Mark’s extensive exposition of Jesus’ identity, character, and teachings, believing is about a relationship with a living person. Look up the scary words in Matthew 7:21-23, that prioritize relationship over ministry activity.

Keep in mind that all of this is good news. It is transformational and life-giving.

Taking It Home: Take each of those four words and consider changes you could make in each.
