Jesus, King of Righteousness and Peace, Saves to the Uttermost Those Who Draw Near to God Through Him.

Topic: Images of the Messiah Passage: Hebrews 7:21b–28
There is a lot of human striving in this life to establish a self-generated peace and wholeness, but true peace is impossible apart from God. Sunday was the Feast of Christ the King, the last day of the Christian calendar and a day to recognize Jesus’ preeminence in all things. A powerful “Image of the Messiah” (sermon series title) comes from the priesthood of Melchizedek, briefly mentioned in Genesis 14:18-21. This mysterious figure is a “priest of God Most High” and he blesses Abram, who in turn gives him a tithe (1/10) of his possessions.
The writer of Hebrews is showing the superiority of Jesus’ priesthood in the New Covenant over the old priesthood under the Levites. Melchizedek’s name literally means “King of Righteousness” and he is described as the King of Salem, which comes from the Hebrew word, Shalom, meaning peace and wholeness (see Hebrews 7:2). Quoting Psalm 110:4, the writer of Hebrews states that the Messiah is promised to forever be a priest in the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 7:17).
Jesus, King of Righteousness and Peace, saves to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him.
Jesus saves by offering himself on the cross as a once-for-all-time propitiation (appeasement for God’s wrath against sin). If we want to have peace with God, we must first let Jesus establish righteousness for us (See Romans 5:1).
Taking It Home: Ask yourself what your peace level is with God. Have you drawn near to God through Jesus so he can give you his righteousness? Many people try to establish their own righteousness through good works. These are not enough. Only Jesus can save. Repent of such personal arrogance and ask Jesus to save you and give you Shalom with God the Father.
