Jesus’ mission TO people advances THROUGH people

Topic: Epiphany Passage: John 1:29–42
In the season of Epiphany, we explore themes related to missions. Jesus tells us in John 20:21, “as the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” He has sent us to be his witnesses in the world, sharing the Gospel with others. But how does someone come to faith?
Jesus’ mission TO people advances THROUGH people.
John the Baptist tells Andrew and an unnamed disciple that Jesus is “the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” They follow Jesus and conclude that he’s the Messiah. Andrew gets his brother Simon and brings him to Jesus. A similar thing happens in a subsequent paragraph with Philip and Nathanial. People meet Jesus then introduce him to others.
John, the author of this Gospel, specifically includes these exchanges with Jesus for our sake. Jesus asks them, “What are you seeking?” The ensuing dialogue is a call to discipleship. John’s Gospel is his way of introducing people to Jesus.
Taking it home: Consider the people in your life right now. Which ones are ministering to you to encourage you to pursue Jesus? Which ones could you be called to minister to? Take initiative in seeking Jesus and in helping others seek him.
