HOW you hear determines WHAT you hear.

February 27, 2022 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: The Gospel of Mark

Topic: The Gospel of Mark

The Parable of the Sower is so well known that we can miss its importance.  One might think it was only for the crowds while Jesus kept his identity secret.  Furthermore, those who have been Christians a long time can stop expecting the Lord to do any more for us in this life than we’re presently experiencing.  Be careful how you listen to the parable because:
HOW you hear determines WHAT you hear.
Jesus appealed to those with “ears to hear” (v. 9).  To those around him with the Twelve, he taught more including the “secret of the kingdom” (v. 10-11).
Jesus quoted Isaiah 6 because many in the crowd were hard of heart and hearing.  He used only parables with the crowds to identify the faithful who press in for more.  Thus, those who receive the parable by faith came for more and received more (see verses 24-25).
He chose the metaphor of a seed and soil for his Word because a seed is apparently weak but has life inherent in it.  It grows all by itself whenever the conditions are right (see verses 26-29).
The depth of soil was the big issue, meaning how a person receives the Word.  The path has no depth and such people remain in unbelief.  The rocks are shallow and only follow Christianity when it’s easy.  The weeds see faith as merely one compartment of life.  The good soil produces a great yield of good fruit.  This could include character growth (Galatians 5) or increased knowledge and love of God (John 15).
Taking It Home:
Do you believe that God could have more for you than you are currently experiencing of his love and goodness?  Go back to his Word this Lent and ask him for more.
