At the age of 12, Jesus surprised his parents by staying behind at the Temple and declaring the need for him to be in his Father’s house. We catch a glimpse into the reality of Jesus’ humanity. Luke tells us twice that he grew in stature and wisdom (v. 40 & v. 52). We also see some of the differences of how Jesus interacted with God and others.

Jesus is fully human but he shows us what it is to be truly human.

Jesus’ comment to his parents showed both Jesus’ INTIMACY with God and the CONFUSION his life and ministry would cause for everyone around him.

This event was a bit of the piercing of Mary’s own heart of which Simeon warned her (v. 35). Jesus was clear on his focus on God the Father and did not apologize for this focus. When he made his statement to Mary, the text says that they did not understand the saying (v. 50). The new wine of Jesus would not fit the old wineskins of prior family obligations.

We also see a kind of intimacy with God that Israel had not known. Jesus referred to God as his “Father,” implying a deep personal and familial connection.  Later as an adult, he would teach us to pray to our heavenly Father in secret (Mat. 6). Jesus revealed the loving and personal relationship that God wants to have with his children.

Taking It Home: Respond directly to God with thanks for his personal love for you. Cultivate an intimate prayer life with him. But also expect confusion from time to time. Jesus won’t always act in ways that make sense to you. As you follow him, other people won’t understand why you act like you do.
