God Gives Each of Us a Life and Work to Do, So Receive Them As His Gift

September 3, 2023 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: Ecclesiastes - The Search for Meaning

Topic: Ecclesiastes - The Search for Meaning Passage: Ecclesiastes 2:1–11

The first chapter of Ecclesiastes teaches us that our life is a fleeting mist that cannot be grasped, therefore it cannot ultimately satisfy. The world will thwart any effort to find satisfaction apart from God. In chapter 2, the “Preacher” sets out to test this theory with self-indulgence. He already knows it’ll be “vanity” (ie: the mist), but he’s going to try it anyway. He pursues pleasure, wine, gardening, building construction, wealth, sex and even wisdom. He becomes the greatest of anyone before him (v. 9). As suspected, it does not fulfill him. However, he does find some enjoyment in his toil (see v. 10). His conclusion is found at the end of the chapter in v. 24 (paraphrased here):

God gives each of us a life and work to do, so receive them as his gift.

The Preacher even notes that God will reward faithfulness with more wisdom, knowledge and joy (v. 26). All of this insight is still “under the sun,” meaning viewed from a secular perspective. We, however, have the advantage of the New Testament teachings of Jesus and the Apostles, which further these ideas.

Jesus taught us to pray for the Father’s “daily bread” (See Matthew 6). God wants us to learn dependence on him moment by moment. In that same section from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus tells us not worry about food and clothing but instead to seek first God’s kingdom.

The Apostle Peter tells us that Jesus has won an imperishable inheritance for those who believe, kept in heaven. Thus, the Christian doesn’t have to try and find satisfaction in this life, merely receive its blessings with gratitude to God.  Much greater things are yet to come.

Taking It Home: Read Philippians 4:11-13. Practice finding contentment in your life.  (hint: giving frequent thanks to God will help)
