The Transfiguration of Jesus

August 6, 2023 Speaker: The Rev. B.E. Palmer Series: Transfiguration of Jesus

Topic: The Transfiguration Passage: Luke 9:28–36

The Transfiguration of Jesus is closely linked to Peter’s Confession as two back-to-back revelation events which signal that God is acting in a new way in the world. Jesus is perceived by Peter as the Messiah, the Christ. He is seen in his glory along with Elijah and Moses, and a voice comes from Heaven: “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.” Following these revelations, enormous changes begin to happen: people are actually entering the Kingdom of God the Father, in the company of Jesus the Son of Man, whom they now proclaim to be the Son of God.

It is true Jesus is our Savior, and he saves us from many things. But in a very real and most personal sense, he comes to save us from ourselves, to help us resist the pressure from within us and from the world around us that twist our lives into ways of self-centeredness. It is a new and very different way of living, and Jesus calls us to go with him on this Way of Love that leads to the Father. The key to the Christian way and the Christian life is this: moving toward God, and then moving on with God.

The Kingdom of God is not a destination where we have at last arrived, it is a journey we go on with God our Father, with Jesus our Savior and Companion, and with the Holy Spirit guiding our hearts and minds and souls in the Way of Love. It is a journey that begins with a confession of trust on our part, and becomes a transformation of life on his part. The Spanish farewell “Vaya con Dios” literally means “Go with God.” This is what it literally means to live life as a Christian: Vaya con Dios.
