There is Only One True God Who Eternally Exists as One Being in three Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit

June 4, 2023 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald

Topic: Trinity Passage: Matthew 28:16–20

In 325 AD, the Council of Nicea, denounced the heresy that Jesus was created, and gave us the early draft of what is now the Nicene Creed, which is an accurate articulation of the Trinity.

There is only one true God who eternally exists as one Being in three Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Each Person of the Trinity is fully God, personal and mutually interrelated in their activities. The word “Trinity” is not in the Bible, but the Trinity is everywhere. In Genesis 1, God creates by his Word and the Spirit is hovering over the waters. In Revelation 22, there is a throne upon which God and the Lamb are ruling, while the Spirit says, “Come.”

Although God’s nature is a mystery, the Trinity is a beautiful truth that blesses us, people made in God’s image.

  1. God is love. See 1 John 4:8. God is a community of love within the Trinity. He didn’t need to create us, but did so out of love. We are made for community with him and with each other.
  2. We need all three Persons of the Trinity or our faith will be sickly imbalanced. If we only have the Father, we’ll become Pharisees. If we only have the Son, we’ll despair for failing to live up to his example. If we only have the Spirit, we’ll care only about personal experience.
  3. The Trinity models submission while having dignity. We can also have full dignity without having to always be in charge.

Taking It Home: Pray to the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Ask God to deepen your own personal knowledge of him and his beauty. Let yourself be caught up in wonder and amazement at his glory.
