God is Making a New People Who Experience Him Personally

May 28, 2023 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: Pentecost Sunday

Topic: Pentecost Passage: Acts 2:1–21

Jesus promised to be with us until he returns, despite his ascension to the Father.  His plan to accomplish this was to send the Holy Spirit, the 3rd Person of the Trinity, which occurred on the day of Pentecost. This transformed our relationship with God.

God is making a new people who experience him personally.

What happened? John the Baptist’s words about Jesus baptizing with fire and the Holy Spirit came true. A sound like wind and tongues as of fire came upon the 120 waiting and praying disciples and they were empowered as Jesus’ witnesses to the crowd of people from every nation. 3,000 believers were added to their number that day.

Why does it matter? God poured out his Spirit upon all flesh, just as the prophet Joel said. God’s presence would now be in the heart of every believer, making them alive in their spirits and intimate with the Holy Spirit.

What can we do in response? All Christians have the Holy Spirit living in them, otherwise they wouldn’t be Christians (See Ephesians 1:13). However, many Christians are not living in the fullness of the Spirit. In Ephesians 5:18, the Apostle Paul commands the church to “be filled with the Holy Spirit,” implying that we have an active part to play in this. The results are fellowship, worship, gratitude and mutual submission. In John 7, Jesus promised “living water” (the Holy Spirit) to those who come to him in thirst.

Taking It Home: Consider your spiritual thirst level. Why might you not be regularly coming to Jesus, asking him to fill you with his Spirit? Renounce whatever is blocking you and come to him. Ask. Seek. Knock. Stay thirsty. As we must keep drinking H2O, so we must keep asking for the Holy Spirit.
