A Life That Pleases God Will Be Dependent on God

April 28, 2024 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: Resurrection Life

Topic: Living the Resurrection Life Passage: John 21:3–14

John gives the thesis of his Gospel in 20:30, “that by believing you may have life.”  The next chapter shares an account that demonstrates how that new kind of life will be dependent on the Lord. Our human inclination toward independence hinders growth in faith matters. Jesus says, “apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).  He taught us to pray for “daily bread,” rather than a year’s supply.

A life that pleases God will be dependent on God.

There was nothing wrong with Peter going fishing, but Jesus, ever the teacher, uses it to reinforce the importance of relying on God. John 21:5 is the key verse. It could best be translated to imply a negative response, something like, “Boys, you didn’t catch any breakfast, did you?” Jesus gives a command with a promise, “Cast your net on the right side and you will find some.” When the miraculous catch comes in, John recognizes Jesus. Jesus looked different after the resurrection (see v. 12-14). “It is the Lord,” John says, and Peter throws himself into the water to swim to Jesus.

Contrast this story with a similar one in Luke 5, and you can see the change in Peter.  He’s now moving toward Jesus instead of away. He had learned in John 6:68 that Jesus has the words of eternal life, so where else could he go?

Peter doesn’t bring anything to Jesus except his cold, wet, hungry self, including the shame of betrayal. Jesus offers him a warm fire and breakfast. There is mercy and grace in the resurrection life.

Taking It Home: Read this account again and reflect on the servant leadership of Jesus. In what ways are you depending on him to serve you?
