Biblical Success is Knowing and Showing God's Love

September 20, 2026 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: The Hardship of Joseph: God Meant It For Good

Passage: Genesis 39:6–23

Everyone has a working definition of success. In one way or another, we all try to live the "good life.” What metric are you using to decide if your life is working?

Today’s chapter in Joseph’s life is bookended with the word success. Verses 2 and 23 tell us that God was making Joseph successful. But his life was like the game of Chutes and Ladders. One good thing is followed by a bad thing in his life. His story asks an important question: Could suffering an injustice for God’s sake actually be a part of your success?

Here’s the secret of Joseph’s success: God was with him. That’s another bookend in this chapter, done twice for emphasis. Verses 2 & 3 along with 21 & 23 each tell us that the Lord was with Joseph. Potiphar could see it (v. 3) and Joseph himself could see it (v. 21). God’s loving kindness was being manifested in him and through him because God was with him.

Biblical success is knowing and showing God’s love in Jesus.

The “Egyptian’s household” was being blessed in partial fulfillment of Genesis 12:3.  More would come ultimately through Jesus. Matthew’s Gospel has some uncanny parallels. It’s bookended by mention of God being with us (See the first and last chapter). Jesus was also betrayed, stripped, falsely accused and condemned.

The world says Jesus’ cross is ultimate failure. God says it’s your salvation and life. God is always right.

Taking It Home:  1. Practice God’s presence by asking him daily to remind you that he’s with you. 2. Be a blessing by asking him who you can bless in his name. 3. Anchor your heart in the assurance of his love stated in Romans 8:38-39
