As a society, America seems to be increasingly fractured into camps and ideologies, at times rising to the level of hatred for others. Some suggest that we are less connected to our neighbors than ever. Regardless, the need for deeper and better human connection is a constant. We were made for community but sin fractures us.

On Get Connected Sunday, the thrust is to motivate church attenders to intentionally build church connections.  

Jesus said, “I will build his church.” In Matthew 16, he follows that statement with a prediction of his imminent crucifixion and the call to follow him by taking up our own cross daily. Romans 12:2 tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Understanding the Gospel can bring many people together.

The cross of Christ has the power to overcome all divisions and build the church.

Despite all our differences, humans have one thing in common: sin. We are self-centered rebels, insisting on our own lordship over God’s rule. Through repentance and faith, we are forgiven and reconciled to God as our Lord. We then become his students, learning how to live the Way of Christ. This unites the church into one body (Rom. 12:4). 

By God’s grace, Christians have varying gifts for use in the body. This gives us a higher purpose which unites us. Consider Jesus’ own disciples, which included a tax collector working with Rome (Matthew) and a zealot working to subvert Rome (Simon). Yet, despite their differences they were able to work together as followers of Jesus.
