Trusting the Father

Passage: Matthew 6:25–34
Jesus’ teaching on worry and anxiety is very relevant for our day and age. Jesus is inviting his disciples out of a life of worry and anxiety into a life of full trust and dependence on their heavenly Father, who knows their needs and delights in providing them.
Jesus communicates this message in three ways:
The wisdom of creation:
Jesus directs our attention to nature, and he points out that birds/lilies don’t worry if there will be enough for tomorrow because they know their Creator will provide what they need.
For those who trust in Christ, they are also his children. And if God cares for the smallest parts of creation, how much more will he care for his children.
The futility of worry:
In verse 27, Jesus reminds us that worry and anxiety do nothing for us. What we worry over is ultimately out of our control and in the hands of God. Therefore, seek to lean on the one who can provide.
What we are made for:
Christians are not designed to seek after the things of this world. As we let go of our earthly treasures and worries, we are freed to get on with what we are truly made for: seeking after the kingdom of God.
Taking It Home:
Letting go of anxiety is likely a lifelong process for many of us, and just like anything else in the Sermon on the Mount, it is a high calling, impossible in our own strength. Therefore, pray to God in moments of worry to ask for help in trusting him as your heavenly Father.
