Freedom From The Resume World

July 12, 2026 Speaker: The Rev. David Beck Series: Upside Down Kingdom

Passage: Matthew 6:1–18

We live in a resume world. We’re taught to promote and advertise ourselves. We earn diplomas and credentials. We inventory our accomplishments and skills on LinkedIn. There’s nothing wrong with that. But as followers of Jesus, we’re often tempted to apply the rules of the resume world to our life of discipleship.

Jesus knows that we’re tempted to do good things for the wrong reasons. We give to charities for the recognition that comes with it. We pray long-winded prayers to impress others. We post on FaceBook about our community service projects.

So, Jesus warns us about the dangers of turning our faith into a performance. He calls us to give in secret to bless those in need. He calls us to pray in a quiet room to our listening Father. And he calls us to fast to draw closer to God, not to put on a show.

There’s more joy and contentment in serving the Lord in secret. You don’t need to maintain status in God’s kingdom. God gives you status in Christ. God’s free gift of grace means you aren't trapped in the resume world.

In God’s kingdom, you don’t need to prove yourself or impress anyone. You can rest in God’s approval. Christ’s righteousness is enough for you.

Taking it Home: Practicing good works in secret helps cultivate contentment and self-forgetfulness. Who could you give an anonymous gift to this week?
