The Holy Spirit is God Who Works In You
May 24, 2026 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: Pentecost Sunday
Topic: Pentecost Passage: John 14:8–17, Acts 2:1–21
The Pentecost feast was already in place when the Holy Spirit came to the early church. It was one of three annual feasts when Jews made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. That original pentecost was a festival of “first fruits” marking the first of the wheat harvest. In a similar way, the “first fruits” of world evangelization happened when all who were gathered in Jerusalem heard the Gospel. The Holy Spirit came in power, emboldening the Apostles and making many born again believers. In John 14, Jesus tells the disciples that the “Helper” (the Holy Spirit) was with them and would be in them (v.17).
The Holy Spirit is God, who works in you
Jesus said shocking things in John 14. He said we’ll do what he’s been doing and even greater works. He also promised to do whatever we ask in his name (v. 12-13).
What is the work? Looking at verse 8, the work of Jesus seems to be making the Father known. In verse 11, the work also seems to be the signs and wonders he performed. The only “work” we could do that is greater than that would be preaching the cross and seeing dead hearts made alive. Of course, this is the Holy Spirit working through our testimony.
Who are the workers? These are Christians and the Holy Spirit. The Greek word paraclete, can mean helper. He helps lead us into truth (v.17) and manifests God to us (v.21). Paraclete can also mean legal advocate. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us. Our sin puts us under God’s wrath. Because of the cross, Christians are forgiven and made alive.
Taking It Home: Pray for greater awareness and receptivity of the Holy Spirit’s ministry in your life.
