God's Medicine for Troubled Hearts
How do we live in God's kingdom despite all the chaos around us? What do we do with our troubled hearts?
In Jesus' Farewell Discourse, he prepared his disciples for his imminent departure. He predicted his coming death. He washed their feet. He predicted Judas' betrayal and Peter’s rejection.
Jesus knew that his disciples' hearts were troubled by his teachings. They were nervous and scared. Jesus did not respond with anger or frustration. He invited them into a deeper relationship and deeper hope.
"Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me."
Jesus told them that he and the Father are one. There is no God behind the back of Jesus. There is only the God whose face we see in the face of Jesus.
Jesus is not one option among many gods. He is the way, the truth, and the life. True life is found not in the right system but through the right person. Only Jesus died for your sins. And only he can bring permanent love and belonging in turbulent times.
Jesus also invites us into deeper hope. He doesn't promise superficial solutions or blind optimism. Instead he promises a place for you and that he will come again to take you to himself.
We live in hopeless times. And Jesus points us to heaven to bring comfort and peace. But the promise of heaven also drives us to love our neighbor. Because our future is secure in Christ's immovable kingdom - we don't live as if this life is all there is. We don't need to build our own kingdoms on earth.
Taking it Home: Thank God that he prepared a place for us through his death and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins. Turn away from false saviors that promise what they can't deliver. Bring your troubled hearts to Jesus - the One who laid down his life for you.
