God Desires to Guide, Protect, and Care for His People Personally

Passage: John 10:1–10
On Good Shepherd Sunday, the church remembers that shepherd imagery is central to God’s heart. Throughout Scripture, God works through shepherds, including King David, who wrote the beloved Psalm 23 that begins with the famous words, “The Lord is my shepherd.” This tells us something important:
God desires to guide, protect, and care for his people personally.
In John Chapter 10, Jesus speaks of sheep, shepherds, and a sheepfold. This teaching comes right after Chapter 9, where Jesus healed a man born blind. When that man testified that Jesus had healed him, the religious leaders rejected him and cast him out. Jesus then explains what had just happened: false shepherds push people away, but the true Shepherd calls his sheep by name.
Jesus says he is both the Shepherd and the Door. He alone has rightful authority to lead God’s people. Others who use power for selfish gain are thieves and robbers. But Jesus says, “If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.” In him there is salvation, freedom, and nourishment. He is the Shepherd David was pointing to in Psalm 23.
Then Jesus gives this promise: “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” This is more than survival—it is God’s overflowing life within us: peace with God, joy in the soul, and strength for today. Jesus does not come to steal, kill, or destroy. He comes to restore wounded hearts. Like a shepherd caring for a rejected lamb, Jesus draws near to those hurt by sin, trauma, or bad leadership.
Action Step: This week, begin each morning by praying: “Jesus, you are my Shepherd. Help me recognize your voice today.” Then spend five quiet minutes in Scripture, asking him to lead your next step.
