Marriage, Singleness: Let Your Current Social Status Serve Discipleship
March 1, 2026 Speaker: Mike McDonald Series: Lent - The Way of the Cross
Passage: 1 Corinthians 7:1–7
The Corinthians had both extreme views when it came to sex and the body: anything goes (chp. 6) and total abstinence (chp. 7). In response to a quote from their letter (v. 1), Paul gives a very balanced view of God’s purposes for sex, marriage and even singleness, all of which are gifts from God.
God desires to work through your current social status (married or single).
Throughout this chapter, Paul conveys a kingdom urgency in light of Christ’s return. The time is growing short (v. 29) and this form of the world is passing away (v. 31). Therefore, whether married or single, live as you are called (v. 17). It’s very similar to Jesus’ call to “seek first the kingdom of heaven.”
Paul commends singleness, such as his own, but only if one can maintain self-control regarding sexual desire. If not, it’s better to marry. Marriage is a good thing and is God’s given space for ongoing and mutually satisfying sex. Outside of marriage, chastity is God’s command for us.
Because of Jesus’ victory on the cross, there is a new way to live. All of our hope does not have to be in this life, including things like pleasure, family, companionship and legacy. If married, our spouse doesn’t have to become our everything, a burden no one but Jesus can bear. Married or single, the church can become a new place of family connection.
Taking It Home: See sex, marriage, and singleness as opportunities to grow in self-control and Christ-like love for others. Find God’s forgiveness in Christ through repentance for sexual sin, resolving to live within God’s good boundaries. Work to build the community of faith at church so singles, widows & widowers, and married people can experience new community.
