The physical world often blinds us to the spiritual reality of God. Like seeds that sprout among thorns, Gospel spirituality often is choked out by the cares of the world, riches and pleasures (See Luke 8). December is a good time to ask just how dialed in we are to God versus worldly things.  

The physical world is not bad, just disordered. We’re warned in Romans 8:6 that, “to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.”

In Christ, the spiritual and the physical come together.

In Mary’s visit to Elizabeth, both women are dealing with the physical changes due to pregnancy and some degree of unjust shame from unusual circumstances. They are excellent examples of disciples who are spiritually attuned.

In response to Mary’s greeting, John the Baptist, yet unborn, rejoices and Elizabeth is filled with the Holy Spirit. Her statement to Mary is worded to generalize faithfulness for everyone. “Blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord” (v. 45).

Elizabeth prophesies that Mary has conceived and is “the mother of my Lord.” In being conceived of Mary and the Holy Spirit, Jesus, the eternal Son of God, became human and lived a perfect life in flesh and blood. His physical body served his mission as he redeemed us physically and spiritually on the cross.

In response, Paul will write things such as, “you were bought with a price, so glorify God with your body” (1 Corinthians 6:20).  

Taking It Home: First, thank Jesus for the Incarnation. Second, set your mind on the Spirit, not the flesh. Third, express your beliefs in worship and in witness.
