God Preserves and Sustains a Faithful Remnant

October 26, 2025 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: Isaiah: Covenant Faithfulness

Passage: Isaiah 65:17–25

Life is a mixed bag. Sometimes it’s wonderful but often it leads to groaning in frustration (Rom. 8:22-23). Jesus, like Isaiah, was often speaking to crowds with hard hearts (see Mat. 13:14-15). In Isaiah’s writings, there are two groups highlighted, the rebellious and the faithful.

God preserves and sustains a faithful remnant.

Our passage starts with the word “for,” beckoning us to look at what is in the earlier part of the chapter. In verses 2, 12 & 13 there is a contrast between the people who are resisting him and a faithful group he calls “my servants” (v.13). When God comes into the midst of his people, there will be both judgment and blessing. Isaiah is writing to warn the rebellious and to encourage the faithful remnant, those who are humble, contrite, and tremble at God’s word (66:2). So how does our text sustain the remnant?

  1. Jesus is remaking all things (v. 17-19). Heaven is the dwelling place of God, which will be with man in the coming days. It’s for those who love God and want to be with him.
  2. Jesus heals death (v. 19b-20, 23). In the future, there will only be fullness of life. Nothing will be cut short.
  3. In the future, there will be no more property worries (v. 21-22). All needs will be met and kingdom generosity will abound.
  4. Jesus is removing the curse of Genesis 3. God’s shalom, holistic peace and welfare, will touch everything, even the flora and fauna.

Taking It Home: Choose to walk on the path of the remnant by faith in Jesus through his death on the cross for your sins.  Repent and return to him. Then, work to bring the future blessings into this time, here and now.
