At The Heart of the Universe is the Worship of God

Topic: Revelation Passage: Revelation 5:1–14
There are many things in life that don’t work like they should. This leads to much anxiety. However, Jesus taught us not to be anxious because our Father cares for us (see Matthew 6:25). He can teach this because he has heaven’s perspective.
At the heart of the universe is the worship of God.
The fourth and fifth chapters of Revelation contain a vision of the throne room of God. He is worthy of our worship for many reasons. Several key attributes of God are declared in the five hymns found in these chapters.
Hymn #1. Revelation 4:8. God is eternal. He “was and is and is to come.” The four creatures, representing the heads of their respective classes of creature, worship God for this trait.
Hymn #2. Revelation 4:11. God created everything. Since everything originated with him, all glory and honor and power ultimately belong to him. The 24 elders, likely the complete covenant people, worship God with glory, honor and power.
Hymn #3 Revelation 5:9. God conquered death by dying. The Lion of Judah is also a little lamb that was slain but is standing. The cross of Jesus is central to knowing God. His atoning death was so shocking, the heavenly creatures and elders all sing a new song about his worthiness to reveal God’s secret future plans.
Hymn #4 Revelation 5:12. All of the angels worship God because he was slain for sin.
Hymn #5 Revelation 5:14. God sits on his throne ruling. Every living thing in all of creation worships the Father and the Lamb.
Taking It Home: Will you see God’s worthiness and choose to worship him? Will you let the Lamb of God take away your fears of the future?
