The Lord Invites Us to Trust Him With Money

Topic: Minor Prophets Passage: Malachi 3:6–12
Unlike other vices, greed has a tendency to hide itself from us. Although money is a practical tool for living, it can take on God-like characteristics. It can be taken as a source of security, worth, power and identity. But God must ultimately provide all of those for his followers. Thus, the Bible says a lot about money and possessions.
The Lord invites us to trust him with money.
Money provides us with an opportunity to see and experience God. He pays attention to the details of our lives, caring about obedience and providing for our needs. He desires for us to become good managers of his stuff, since everything is ultimately his.
Since money is a problem for the fallen human heart, it’s good to have a starting point for giving. God has provided this in the tithe, which means “tenth” or 10%. Malachi was calling for reforms in the spiritual practices of Israel post-exile. God accused them of robbing him because they were not bringing in the full tithe. This money provided for the various ministries of Israel’s worship. The tithe is also useful in that it broke the stranglehold the money can have on our hearts.
Generosity can only flow from a transformed heart. Jesus became poor to make us rich. Zacchaeus rejoiced that Jesus accepted him and this came forth in sudden and proportional generosity (see Luke 19). In Malachi, God actually invites us to test him in this area by bringing the full tithe into his house. In response he promises to bless us massively.
Taking It Home: Examine your feelings about giving. Is it a joy or burden? Is your lifestyle simplifying or getting more expensive? Set a lifestyle limit for 2025 in consultation with the Lord.
