The Lord in Your Midst is Mighty to Save

Topic: Minor Prophets Passage: Zephaniah 3:9–20
Twice in this section, we learn that the Lord is in the midst of his people. That makes life into an exciting adventure, but one that must be lived on God’s terms. The Israelites remaining in the Southern Kingdom were provoking God by their idolatry and they were certainly not seeking him. Seeking God is a theme mentioned in each of the three chapters. In what ways are you seeking the Lord even now? The major truth we learn from this minor prophet is this:
The Lord in your midst is mighty to save.
But what is he saving us from and for? And who qualifies to be saved? Right from the start of Zephaniah’s writing, God pronounced judgment against the whole earth (1:2). The language is reminiscent of the days of Noah’s ark. Although Chapter 2 listed nations surrounding Jerusalem from all compass points, the judgment is against all mankind, Jew and Gentile. It turns out that God is saving us from his wrath against our sin and saving us into his service (3:9).
There is a pretty big jump from judgment to encouragement in 3:9. God will take away shame and judgments and rejoice over his people. But how is this possible while retaining justice? We only learn later, hundreds of years later, that the Cross of Jesus is where our sin will be atoned for. Who is qualified for this salvation? It’s those who are humble and penitent. Zephaniah 2:3 describes the humble posture well. God will exalt the humble, but humble the proud. For those who humbly seek God, they will find him exalting over them with singing!
Taking It Home: Seeking God begins by humbly repenting of sin and turning to the Lord who is in your midst.
