God's Love for Sinners is Personal

September 1, 2024 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: Minor Prophets Major Truths

Topic: Minor Prophets Passage: Hosea 11:1–9

The Lord called his prophet Hosea to a difficult task, marrying a woman who would repeatedly be adulterous (see Hosea 1). Hosea’s broken heart would reflect God’s own heart toward his wayward people, Israel, whom he regarded like a spouse that repeatedly committed spiritual adultery. As the covenant curses recorded in Moses’ warnings are about to occur for Israel, we see a glimpse into God’s heart.

God’s love for sinners is personal.

At the thought of executing his righteous judgment against Israel, God’s Word states, “my heart recoils within me” (Hosea 11:8). God’s heart is broken about Israel’s apostasy. It is easy for us to mistakenly regard God in an impersonal, almost mechanical way, as though he is not personal. God’s love for his people is heartfelt and passionate. His holiness and steadfast disposition against sin are also passionate. However, he is “slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” (Exodus 34:6).

Hosea takes us through a number of metaphors for God that reveal his tender care. He is a loving Father (v.1), an unknown healer (v. 3), and a kind farmer (v. 4). However, his “people are bent on turning away…” (v. 7). This is the human problem that only God can heal.

Verses 8 & 9 reflect the internal turmoil God experiences as the Assyrians come against Israel. God restrains his wrath, being faithful to his character and covenant promises. “I am God and not a man” (v. 9). God takes the full blow of his wrath upon himself on the Cross of Christ.

Taking It Home: Repent of your heart condition by admitting that you’re bent on turning away from God. Express belief in Jesus as Savior. Practice reciprocating God’s love for you through worship.
