True Family is Found in Christ With Those Who Are Seeking Him

July 14, 2024 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: Growing Deeper

Topic: Growing Deeper Passage: Mark 3:11– 4:30

This text is one of Mark’s frequent “sandwiches” in which he tells one story while inserting another. In both stories, the people misunderstand or even reject the Kingdom of God. Jesus’ mother and brothers hear about the large crowds and try to “seize” him (v. 21). They are standing outside the gathered circle trying to help, but are actually hindering his work. Inserted is a much worse story of religious leaders from Jerusalem who have clearly hardened their hearts against Jesus’ ministry (see Mark 3:2-6). They attribute Jesus’ ministry to Satan’s power instead of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus responds by telling two parables against their logic and then a stern teaching about the peril of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. This inner story in the “sandwich” shows the hardness of heart that can happen by consistently rejecting Jesus’ work. Godliness is not a static thing, but something that must be exercised to grow.

His family is still standing outside calling for Jesus. He responds, “whoever does the will of God, his is my brother and sister and mother” (v. 35).

True family is found in Christ with those who are seeking him.

Jesus brought the Kingdom of God and through repentance and belief in him, we can be part of a new kind of family. The old divisions are broken down in Jesus (see Galatians 3:28). The waters of baptism unite you to a new community.

Taking It Home: As a church we “equip youth and families for godly living.” You can choose to make your home a Christ-centered home in lots of ways. Mark it with Christian symbols, pray for each other regularly, tell Bible stories to your kids, grandkids, or other family members. Choose to fellowship with other believers.
