A Transformed Life

May 26, 2024 Speaker: The Rev. Jack McNeil Series: Growing Deeper

Topic: Growing Deeper Passage: Romans 8:12–17

The transformed life of a Christian is described as changing from a slave to sin, to a Spirit-led son or daughter of God, who is a fellow heir with Christ. In this transformation process, Paul reminds us of three important truths to remember.

  1. Transformation is only accomplished by the Spirit, but we are still responsible to put death the deeds of the flesh (vss 12-13). Verse 12 reads, “If by the Spirit” (referring to divine grace), “you put to death” (referring to our human effort). Even though the sinful nature is not eradicated upon conversion or baptism, Christians are no longer indebted/obligated to live according to it. And yet, it is only by the Holy Spirit that they can put to death the deeds of the flesh.
  1. Christians have the security as children of God in a fallen and broken world(vss 14-15). All too often Christians doubt their standing before God due to the slowness and lack of progress in their transformation. Paul says in verse 14, “For all who are led by the Spirit are children of God.” To be led by the Spirit means the Spirit has “prevailing influence” in your life, including making you care about being made in the image of Christ. You may not always understand where the Spirit is leading, but you can be sure it is not going back into being led by fear (“Am I good enough?”). The Christian receives the Spirit of Adoption, confirming they are child of God, to whom we cry, “Abba, Father!”
  1. As heirs with Christ, we must embrace suffering with Christ as being on the same road to our future glory with Christ(vs 17). This includes all the anxieties and persecution of following Jesus, as well as the suffering that comes with transformation (Rom 5:3-4). This includes putting to death our pride and self-righteousness. To suffer with Christ gives you the very assurance that you will be glorified with him.

Application

  1. If you are Christian, and know an area of your life that is not led by the prevailing influence of the Spirit, or have grown disillusioned with the lack of progress and slowness of transforming into the image of Christ, confess it to your Father. Acknowledge you are a son or daughter, and trust that He is indeed working in you, by His Spirit, as you make any and every effort to put to death the deeds of the flesh.

2. If you are a Christian who is suffering, and wonder, “Why is this happening? Is this life worth it?” Be encouraged! Ask God to give you faith to cry out to Him, “Abba, Father,” and know God has not abandoned you. Your suffering isn’t meaningless, it is the very evidence of your future glory with Christ.
