It Is Better to Suffer than to Sin

May 21, 2023 Speaker: The Rev. Curtis Froisland Series: I Peter - Living as Sojourners in a Strange Land

Topic: I Peter - Living as Sojourners in a Strange Land Passage: 1 Peter 4:12–19

In 1 Peter 4:12-19, the Apostle returns to the theme of suffering as a Christian. He challenges us with this big idea: it is better to suffer than to sin (v. 15-16).

First, he shows us that it is better to suffer than to sin because God uses suffering to refine our faith. Precious metals drawn from the ground are full of impurities and must be refined. The metalsmith heats the ore to the point where impurities are burned away or removed. In the same way, God uses the “fiery trial” (v. 12) to remove our heart idols and mixed allegiances in order to bring out faith more precious than gold (1:6-7).

Second, it is better to suffer than to sin because suffering is evidence that we belong to Christ (v. 14-16). If we have faith in Christ, the Spirit of God rests upon us (v. 14), and we suffer in this world as those who live under the rule of another kingdom - the Kingdom of God. We should guard our lives and not suffer for sin (v. 15), but rejoice that we suffer in the name “Christian” because we identify ourselves completely with Christ (v. 16).

Finally, it is better to suffer than to sin because sharing Christ’s sufferings means we will share in his glory (v. 13). Jesus Christ suffered for our sins, and was raised in glory. We share in his sufferings that we might share in his glory and resurrection (v. 13, Phil 3:8-12). Moreover, the suffering we face now for Christ’s sake pales in comparison to the suffering of unbelievers at the last judgment (v. 17-18).

How do these reasons challenge and strengthen you to “entrust” yourself to God (v. 19)? How is God calling you to do good even in the face of suffer (v. 19)?
