Christ Has One Body Where You Belong

August 28, 2022 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald

Topic: Get Connected Sunday

In only the second chapter of the whole Bible, “the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18).  We are not made to be alone.  In Ephesians 2:12, the Apostle Paul says that, before the Gentiles became Christians, they were separated, alienated and strangers.  Those are tough words to hear.  Thankfully, Jesus is the solution.  For those who trust in him, there is a new type of belonging described in the metaphor of a human body.  Christ is the head and Christians are the body parts.

Christ has one body where you belong.

Christ has one body.  The word “one” occurs seven times in three verses.  Although people see many denominations, God only sees one church.  The Creed calls it “one, holy, catholic and apostolic.”  Paul seems to have anticipated the inevitable splits into denominations because in verse 2 he calls for charity and patience with one another.  However, since God only has one church in the world, we are not in a competition with other believers.  In fact, this is not even our church.  It belongs to Jesus!  So hold on loosely.

Where you belong.  Although the body is one, the parts are many with varying gifts (v. 7).  When they work properly (v. 16) the body builds itself up.  Verse 12 tells us that special gifts are given to leaders so that Christians are equipped for the work of ministry.  This means church members are actually the ministers, not just the clergy.  Through membership in the community of faith, you can discern your gifts and use them as part of a glorious whole body.
