In Jesus, God’s Kingdom is Now Here

February 13, 2022 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: The Gospel of Mark

Topic: The Gospel of Mark Passage: Mark 1:14–28

We often long for a perfect leader who is all-powerful, who loves us personally and who can see everything needed to make the best decisions.  There is only one human who fits that description – Jesus.  Despite his unmatched credentials to be the King of all things, we are frequently tempted to run our own lives.  To yield lordship to him is to come into his kingdom.  The “kingdom” simply put is where the King’s rule is recognized.  He allows people to reject it, at least for a little while longer.  Thankfully, it’s available for all who desire it. The major message of today’s text is that:

In Jesus, God’s kingdom is now here.

The Gospel proclamation was, “The time is fulfilled, the kingdom of God is at hand…” (verse 15).  What follows are demonstrations of this kingdom.  Jesus taught with authority directly from the Father.  Unclean spirits cried out at Jesus and then submitted to his commands.  The Gospel message was not just about sin and hell, but about an invitation to participate in this kingdom.

In verse 16, Jesus calls his first disciples. The invitation still extends to us today.  We learn three things related to becoming Jesus’ students.

  1. Jesus says, “Follow me.” This is an invitation to become his apprentice and learn his ways.  It’s not compulsory.
  2. Jesus says, “I will make…” Jesus will challenge students to become like him in character.
  3. Jesus’ students will be “fishers of men,” meaning they are expected to join his mission to win all people into his kingdom.

Can you imagine what would happen if 500 people at Grace Anglican Church all committed to seriously following Jesus?  It would transform our community in a powerful way.
