A Recap from Sunday’s Sermon

Preaching Text: Proverbs 25:11-13

Speech is a powerful gift from God. Our ability to communicate through words is part of what it means to be made in the image of God. The Bible is called the “word of God.”  From Genesis to Revelation, we see that God is a speaking God, whose Son is called the Word (John 1:1), the One whose words will never pass away (Mark 13:31).  However, Jesus’ brother, James, wrote extensively about the dangers of speaking and how much harm it can cause. We would be wise to consider how we are using our words. Do they build others up and bless or do the opposite?

Proverbs 25:11 says, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.”  Solomon is instructing his sons to bring good words to the royal court. The “word fitly spoken” will help make godly decisions. It’s poetically displayed as an ornate platter with silver and gold.

Godly speech is beautiful and valuable.

But where can we get such speech? In the example of Jesus, we find that his teaching came directly from the Father.  “…I declare to the world what I have heard from him” (John 8:26). In Matthew 15:10-20, we learn that our mouths speak from the overflow of our hearts. If our hearts are full of God and his kingdom, our speech will be good. Therefore, if we want beautiful and valuable speech we must get connected to God and let him transform our hearts.

Taking It Home: Spend a little time recalling what came out of your mouth recently. Invite God to show you what your heart is like. Pray for him to renew your heart. Study the teachings of Jesus and look for ways to participate in his kingdom here.
