Seek God's Wisdom Because Your Life Depends On It

June 13, 2021 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: Proverbs - Walking Wisely in a Fool's World

Topic: Proverbs - Walking Wisely in a Fool's World Passage: Proverbs 2:1–11

Life is full of searches of varying significance, from the superficial to life-and-death importance. The more important something is, the harder you’ll search. Proverbs 2 is challenging us to diligently seek God’s wisdom.

Seek God’s wisdom because your life depends on it.

The first four verses contain “if” three times. Solomon presents his hearers with an option. Many people do not even realize that there’s a fork in the road: the wise or foolish path. Verse 4 likens wisdom to hidden treasure, indicating a hidden nature to wisdom. God wants us to search for him, the source of wisdom.

Jesus also taught a brief parable about God’s kingdom being like a treasure hidden in a field (Matthew 13:44).

Proverbs 2 tells us that “if” we seek God’s wisdom, “then” we will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. Throughout the Bible, God is seen as the Almighty Judge. Proverbs 2:22 says that the wicked will be cut off from the land. Fear of the Lord is a healthy reverence for him. To compliment that, we will also find the knowledge of God. Verses 7 & 8 tell of how good he is to those who fear him. He is a shield and guardian of their way. He watches over his saints.

Colossians 2:3, 7 tell us that in Christ Jesus are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge and that we are to be rooted in him. In this fool’s world, we are presented with a choice that leads to life everlasting. Seek God’s wisdom because your life depends on it.

Taking It Home: Study the person of Christ. Treasure his teachings by committing his word to your heart. Grow your relationship with God by practicing daily prayer.
