Abiding in Jesus’ Commands Results in the Fruit of Prayer, Love and Growth

May 9, 2021 Speaker: The Rev. Mike McDonald Series: Easter - Seeking Jesus

Topic: Easter: Seeking Jesus Passage: John 15:7–17

Much like a eulogy is a snapshot of a person’s entire life, so is the “fruit” that Jesus mentions in John 15. It’s not one specific work or character trait, but the summation of a life in Christ. It is pleasing to God, and a joy to the believer (v. 11).

Abiding in Jesus’ commands results in the fruit of prayer, love and growth.

The word “abide” occurs in this chapter eleven times. Rather than looking at it from the perspective of a mystical union with God like the previous chapter does, it should be viewed here in far more mechanical terms. Jesus emphasizes that abiding will occur if we keep his commands (v. 10). This requires that we actually study Jesus’ teaching so we know what his commands are. Then we must resolve to live by them.

The word “fruit” occurs eight times in this passage. While fruit can certainly include the nine character traits of Galatians 5 or global evangelism as seen in Matthew 28, today’s preaching text emphasizes prayer, love and growth.

  1. Effectiveness in prayer. Verses 7 and 16b speak of abiding in Jesus’ words and praying “in my name.” This means praying in alignment with his will. The one who is abiding will see an increased effectiveness in prayer. “Ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you” (v.7).
  2. Among his many commands, Jesus expects us to love each other as he has loved us (v. 12).
  3. Growth in fruitfulness is implied in the fact that the Father’s will is that we would bear much fruit (v. 8).

Taking It Home: Write out a brief eulogy of what you want your life to be like from God’s perspective.  Make any changes needed to abide in Jesus’ commands.
