In suffering, it’s comforting to know that the Eternal God rules over the past, present and future.

October 11, 2020 Speaker: Mike McDonald Series: Daniel: God's Sovereignty in Challenging Times

Topic: Daniel: God's Sovereignity in Challenging Times Passage: Daniel 7:9–18

In times of great suffering, people long to know the future. The Psalmist asks, “Oh Lord, how long?” (Ps. 6:3).  The martyrs cry out for justice but must wait a little while longer (Rev. 6).  In such times, a glimpse of things to come is very encouraging.

In suffering, it’s comforting to know that the Eternal God rules over the past, present and future.

Chapter 7 shares similarities with chapter 2.  Both include a frightening dream depicting four kingdoms.  The first one, given to Nebuchadnezzar, seems to be from an earthly perspective.  The second one, given to Daniel and described in apocalyptic language, seems to be from a heavenly perspective.

PAST

The vision has four types of beasts which historically align with Babylon, Media/Persia, Greece, and Rome. Jesus was incarnated and brought his kingdom during Roman rule.

PRESENT

Daniel 7:13-14 depicts the Son of Man (Jesus) on the clouds and coming before the Ancient of Days (the Father), who gives him everlasting dominion. Jesus is presently ruling the universe from the Father’s right hand. He has left his church in the world as witnesses until the time of his return.

FUTURE

Daniel 7:23-27 depicts a figure emerging from ten kingdoms coming out of the fourth. This is likely the Antichrist. He will be judged, stripped of his dominion and destroyed. The “saints of the Most High” will then be given the kingdom and dominion (v.27).

This vision of God’s sovereignty over all kingdoms encourages those in exile and suffering to press on despite the hardships of life. It also invites believers to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.

Taking It Home: Since no one knows the hour of Christ’s return, what things can you do to live at the ready?
