Trinity Sunday

June 7, 2020 Speaker: Lenny Konschewitz

Topic: Trinity Passage: Genesis 1:1.2–26.27, Matthew 3:16–17

The God we worship has revealed himself to us through Scripture as a Triune God. From eternity God has existed within a relationship of coequal persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Pure love and perfect unity mark their relationship to such a degree that they appear as One.

Creation was made as an extension of this divine relationship of love and unity. The Holy Spirit was the one who descended upon the waters and brought forth life in a void and formless environment before everything culminated in the creation of God’s image bearers, Adam and Eve. Unfortunately, Adam and Eve sinned and division entered their (and our) relationships with God and with one another. We have been battling the consequences ever since, but the Triune God had a plan.

In Matthew 3:16-17, we find the Father sending the Holy Spirit upon the waters again pointing to the “seed” of a new Creation, Jesus. After he died on the cross, rose again and went back to the Father, something marvelous happened: the Holy Spirit was sent to give birth to the Church and to indwell believers on Pentecost. The powerful sign that accompanied Pentecost was one tongue understood in many languages. In other words, from day one, the Holy Spirit has been at work to break down walls of division and to transform us back into the image of the Triune God. Unity in diversity! We honor and celebrate different ethnicities, cultures, colors of skin, maleness and femaleness, but we don’t allow these things to cause division anymore.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
