Jesus Is Really Alive and Walks With Us

April 26, 2020 Speaker: Mike McDonald Series: I Have Seen the Lord

Topic: I Have Seen the Lord Passage: Luke 24:13–35

The resurrection appearance along the road to Emmaus is one of the most well-beloved stories in the Bible. However, its story-like elements can make it sound fictional to our modern ears. Thus, before we can evaluate the content, we must first validate the actuality of the event. Luke, the author, includes the name Cleopas as a way of inserting a footnote, so his first readers could verify the story. He also purposed to give an orderly account of real events (Luke 1:1-4). It really happened and he artistically related it.

The traveling companions were vigorously discussing Jesus’ ministry when he approached them. Despite their eyes being kept from recognizing Jesus, they describe in significant detail the things concerning him. They likely didn’t recognize him because his resurrected body was different in some way and also because the Lord kept them from recognizing. There is great mystery in why a person comes to faith when he or she does. Jesus is still at work today.

Jesus is really alive and walks with us, opening eyes to behold him.

After gently rebuking them for their lack of faith and understanding, Jesus explains to the companions all the things concerning him in the Old Testament. Finally, when he breaks bread with them, their eyes were opened to see him. Their own description of the experience was having burning hearts as he was teaching them.

This experience is still common today. The Lord opens eyes and hearts to behold him in the word and sacrament. This story can be used as a meditative tool to practice walking with Jesus.

Taking It Home: Consider a challenge in your life. Imagine walking along with Cleopas and the “stranger” who draws near you. Invite him [Jesus] to speak into your situation, opening your heart and mind to the Scriptures.
