The Confession of Worship

November 3, 2019 Speaker: Mike McDonald Series: Liturgy - The Work of the People

Topic: Liturgy - The Work of the People Passage: Psalm 32–11

This sermon begins four weeks on the topic of worship, drawing from the Psalms.  It’s titled, “Liturgy,” which means the work of the people.  Part of the “work” of worship is the necessary act of confession, but we are resistant.  We hear lies like “it’s only wrong if you’re caught,” and “no one will know.”  In truth, some things are always wrong and people do know, at a minimum, you and God know.

Our physical bodies and our consciences can’t tolerate life with unconfessed sin.  King David says, “when I kept silent my bones wasted away” (Ps. 32:3).  Confession is a good and needed practice.  “If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

God’s merciful character makes confession desirable.

He is quicker to forgive than we are to confess.  In Ps. 32:5, David confesses his sin and receives forgiveness.  He exhorts his readers to do the same.  The person whose transgression is forgiven is called “blessed” (v.1).  The Apostle Paul even quotes this verse in Romans 4:7 when he sets up the righteousness that is credited to those who trust in Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection (see Romans 4:24-25).

In our baptism vows, we renounce our sinfulness, the world’s corruption and the works of Satan.  In place we affirm our trust in Christ as our Savior.  The washing of water in baptism reminds us of God’s gift of forgiveness to those who “repent and believe the Gospel” (Mark 1:14).

Taking it home: This week spend some personal time in confession with the Lord.  Invite him into any area of sin in your life.  Give him license to tell you what’s needed for transformation, then obey what he says.
