A Recap from Sunday’s Sermon

Preaching Text: Luke 14:7-13

In chapter 14 of Luke’s gospel, Jesus is at a banquet. Upon noticing the way people postured for seats of honor, he tells a parable. The parable teaches the right attitude that any follower of Jesus ought to embrace. It espouses taking the place of least honor so that the host could elevate you. The reverse is that you would likely be humbled if you exalt yourself into a position of honor.

Jesus exalts the humble.

It is a natural human need to be valued, affirmed and accepted. This is all part of healthy self-esteem. However, most people feel a lack of such affirmation and are tempted to seek it for themselves.   This causes many quarrels and conflicts in life. What we ultimately need is God’s approval. When a person has that, he or she can willingly overlook worldly positions of honor.

The cross of Jesus both lowers and lifts us. It actually shows us how broken we are and how much we need to be saved. We are sinners deserving that cross. But Jesus dies the death we should have died so we can live the life he lived. Jesus was the only human truly worthy to sit at the head of every banquet table. Yet he humbled himself to take on the role of servant for our sake. This shows us how much we are loved and valued. In this regard the cross of Jesus lifts us up. Through faith in Christ, we are forgiven, accepted and filled with God’s love for us. This is the affirmation we all need out of which we can take the last place.   “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you” (1 Peter 5:6).

Taking it home: Discuss with your family or small group where you have an opportunity to make yourself last instead of putting yourself first.
