Lent - The Way of the Cross

Apostle Paul's first letter to the Corinthians begins with a clear description of the new status a person receives by coming to faith in Jesus (see 1 Cor. 1:2-9). He then proceeds to address numerous discipleship issues that the Corinthians were not embracing or possibly not even aware of. We began preaching through 1 Corinthians in Epiphany season, and we will continue throughout Lent. Paul begins and ends his letter in the same place: at the Cross. He resolved to preach one main message to Corinth: "Christ and him crucified" (2:2). His letter ends with an entire chapter on the significance of the Resurrection (chapter 15). During Lent, we'll spend 40 days of penitence, fasting and prayer, but all of it is done knowing the victory we already have in Jesus's death and resurrection. Lent starts with Ash Wednesday. "...As we are marked with ashes in the same manner that we were signed with the Cross in Baptism, we are also reminded of the life we share in Jesus Christ" (Book of Common Prayer, pg. 542).
