Advent - A Season of Transformation

The annual Christian calendar commences by drawing us into a penitential season. Like the secular New Year's Day, the liturgical new year welcomes resolutions. What will I do differently this year? "Advent" is from the Latin word "adventus" for "coming toward" or "arrival." Advent considers both his 2nd and 1st comings, in that order. As the Creed declares, our Lord will come again. He has also arrived in the first Christmas. Amidst the necessary shopping and holiday preparations, Advent invites us to take time to consider the meaning of Jesus' lordship. It reminds us to stay awake in expectation of our Lord's return. For the Christian who delights in the Lord, Advent is about hope and holiness. We have great hope that one day soon all will be transformed according to God's will. In the meantime, we are cooperating with his ongoing work of making us holy as he is holy. What would you like him to heal or transform in you this season?
