Pentecost Sunday 2019
This Sunday is the Feast of Pentecost, named for the world-changing event that happened 50 days after the Lord’s Resurrection. During the original event, the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, came upon the church in great power. He was the promised Helper for which Jesus told his followers to wait. The call that Jesus places on his followers is impossible without his help. After receiving the Holy Spirit, the eleven disciples became bold and powerful witnesses to Jesus. They had a new kind of fire that transformed them from the inside out. John the Baptist told his own followers that he baptized them with water but the One coming after him, Jesus, would baptize with the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:8). This happened at Pentecost, and ever since the Holy Spirit has been present in and with the followers of Jesus. For this Sunday and the following week, we will be considering the ongoing effects and the significance for us today of an event that happened 2,000 years ago. The abundant life that Jesus promised (John 10:10) is found by a life in the Spirit. Join us this Sunday!
