A Recap from Sunday’s Sermon

Preaching Text: Luke 8:4-15, 18.

Throughout the Gospels, we find many different invitations from our Lord.  “Come to me,” “Repent and believe,” “Ask, seek, knock,” etc.  The Parable of the Sower is no different.  It comes with Jesus’ invitation, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”  With this invitation, Jesus sorts a crowd of onlookers finding those who are exercising faith and moving toward his kingdom.  The parable also conceals truth from those who are lacking faith.  They find his teaching irrelevant and move on to other things.  But some people take these nuggets of truth and come closer for more.

Jesus is still inviting people to press in for more of his kingdom.

However, some will not respond, which is the situation today as well as back then.  The parable teaches us that God’s word is being broadcast widely and liberally, but not everyone will respond.  But some will respond for a 10,000% return!  For those who share in the spreading of God’s word, this parable recommends patience.  But for everyone, it should give a jolt, causing us to ask, “Am I the good soil or one of the three that are unfruitful?”

Jesus describes the ideal in verse 15.  The good soil represents those who, “hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.” If we respond well to what Jesus first gives us, he promises to give even more.  If we neglect what we have, even that will be lost (see v.18).  This semester, press in further to God’s work. Get connected to your church. Expect more, not less of God.

Taking It Home: Name a few ways God has invited you. Imagine what else he might do if you were faithful with what you’ve experienced of him.
